The race for Student Government Association vice president has attracted two candidates. Sophomores Tim Scego and Ryan Brown have filed for the office as of Wednesday, March 31.
Scego, a social science secondary education and history major, is from Owensville. He has been involved with SGA for over a year, first as a class representative and currently as sophomore class treasurer.
One of the major duties of the vice president is to chair one of SGA's five major committees. If elected, Scego plans to chair the Student Affairs Committee, which would go along with his major campaign platform to gather student input through surveys. As the Student Affairs Committee chairman, Scego would attempt to implement one or two major surveys per semester. He would also like to work out an arrangement with Southwest Baptist University faculty and staff where the surveys could be administered simultaneously to teacher evaluations.
"I want to get the students voices heard to the administrators," Scego said. "I don't think students realize how powerful their voice is."
Issues Scego would like to see addressed include the installation of lights for the Landen Hall sand volleyball court and the addition of more Cherry Coke Breaks like the one hosted by SGA last Monday.
Scego and presidential candidate Marilyn McGinniss share similar ideas about student government and appear together on some campaign literature.
"(Marilyn and I) have a lot in common," Scego said. "But we want students to realize that this is not an all-or-nothing campaign."
Scego went on to explain that the two are not running as a team.
Brown is a business major from Gerald. He has never before served in SGA, but relishes the opportunity to be involved through this campaign.
"The main reason I wanted to run was to get involved in school politics," Brown said. "I want to be able to represent students."
If elected, Brown would prefer to chair the student activities committee. From this position he would like to propose a wider variety of student activities and he would like be see more students become involved in SGA-sponsored activities.
Brown is coordinating his campaign with the campaign of junior SGA secretary candidate Andrew Gibler. The two have put up joint posters and plan to distribute stickers tauting their campaigns.
"I really want to try to get other students involved in SGA and make others happy with the setting," Brown said.
An interesting note to the vice presidential race is the fact that Scego and Brown both attended the same high school in Owensville and live on the same floor in Landen Hall.
