As of Wednesday, March 31 two candidates had filed to run for the office of Student Government Association secretary, juniors Kimber Carriker and Andrew Gibler.
Carriker is in her second year at Southwest Baptist University. She hails from Harvard, Neb. and is double majoring in Missions and Psychology. Carriker served in SGA as a class representative her freshman year and is currently sophomore class vice president.
In addition to her SGA duties, Carriker is a resident assistant at Woody Hall and plays in the Symphonic Winds and Pep Band.
Carriker feels qualified for the position and will make cleaning up the SGA office a priority.
"I'm organized," Carriker said. "I want to be able to carry out the voice of the student body through a leadership position in SGA."
Carriker also enjoys running elections and general organization which are central parts of the secretary's job description.
Carriker has been making posters and talking to people about her candidacy.
"I've had a positive response," Carriker said. "I'm pretty active around campus and I know a lot of people."
Gibler is a secondary education major with an emphasis in math from Independence.
This is Gibler's first year at SBU and this semester he has served as a junior class representative. Prior to coming to Bolivar, Gibler completed his associate's degree at Longview College in Lee's Summit.
"I want to run for office because I like to be involved with students," Gibler said. "I want to make a difference for the students."
Gibler feels his organizational abilities will be a major plus in fulfilling secretarial duties.
"I will make sure things get done," Gibler said. "I want to be the man for the job."
Candidates for SGA secretary must be current, full-time students, maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (2.25 at SBU) and must have completed at least 12 hours of college credit.
The SGA election will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday April 7 in the Goodson Student Union.
