Inspiration for senior Aarik Danielson's brainchild, Emerging Musicians United, has nothing to do with an animal. Instead, EMU is a campus club with the intention of helping bands and artists achieve their goals. EMU helps artists with promotions, recording, booking shows and publicity.
There are currently 12 bands and artists in EMU. There are yearly dues of $10 to be involved with EMU; however, only one member of the band must join the club for the entire band to receive the services.
EMU provides bands with a venue: SBU's Ingman Hall, a place to practice and perform shows. Ingman has been a huge asset to the campus this year because it is a much better venue for bands than the coffeehouse or Pike Auditorium. Ingman has adequate seating and a fun atmosphere that exemplifies the concert experience. Sophomore Eric Davey and freshman Lance Coffman also provide affordable recording services on high quality equipment. EMU is currently considering renovations for Ingman, including soundproofing for recording and adding standing room for the hall's theatre. Once the theatre becomes a decent venue, SBU can offer better quality concerts, which benefits everyone.
An exciting upcoming event for the club is the summer tour. It will last 10 days, starting with the last week in July. The tour will begin in Springfield, Missouri, continue through Illinois to Chicago and end back in Springfield again with a show at NuBrew Coffeehouse. There will be a total of 10 shows in 10 days. Singer-songwriter Davey will play each night, along with the melodic hardcore band Aineo, the pop punk rock band Exit Stage Left and the unclassifiable band Jocasta's Broach (seriously, they're not that bad). Coffman will also be on the tour as the road manager, along with accountant Kyle Smith (senior) and driver Emily Barlow.
Another exciting development with EMU is the second stage at SBU's Revolution Festival April 23-24. On both Friday and Saturday, this stage will be occupied mostly by EMU artists. Some bands to play on the second stage will be Wescott, Davey, Aineo, Jenna Barbosa, Abbington, Jocasta's Beach and Exit Stage Left.
There is also a mind-blowing EMU show at Ingman Theatre on Saturday, April 3, at 8 pm. The show will feature Jocasta's Broach, Exit Stage Left and Stereostatic, all for only $3! Sophomore Ryan Bly really wants people to come: "Come to the show; shake your bottom, and throw things at me," Bly said.
