"The pageant was well- received by all who attended and was very entertaining," pageant judge and Director of Residence Life Amy Welch said. "Reviving the tradition of the Beasley Babes pageant was a great idea and a worthy cause. I hope the pageant will continue throughout the years."
The evening was a great success as the 14 contestants entertained the crowd with their talents, formal wear and answers to the questions presented them.
The Beasley Sweetheart Pageant was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.; however, technical difficulties with the electricity in Mabee Chapel caused the evening's schedule to be pushed back 30 minutes.
Everyone, including the contestants and production team, was ushered into the lobby of the chapel after the building lost electricity during the evening's rehearsal.
Bob Glidwell, Director of the SBU Physical Plant, and other physical plant employees, arrived promptly at the auditorium to assess the situation. After several minutes they were able to restore the building's electricity.
Regardless of the minor setback at the pageant's beginning, the rest of the evening went as planned with the exception of the "mystery event" being cut from the program due to time constraints.
"I thought the pageant was fun," senior Beasley RA Sara Drake said. "It was great to see the girls up there being silly. I hope this is something that continues. I especially loved my fellow RA's strutting their stuff during their little dance. More than anything, though, I am glad that we could be a part of making this women's conference possible. It will be a great weekend filled with much truth."
The events of the evening included acrobatic talent, vocal stylings, dramatic interpretations and one contestant even impressed the crowd with her cleaning skills.
"It was fun to do and also rewarding knowing that I was helping a good cause," freshman contestant Angie Wright said.
The evening raised around $250 for the "eimi dikaios" Women's Conference that will be held on campus Thursday, April 15 through Saturday, April 17.
"The Beasley Babes would like to thank all those who helped make our pageant a success and allow us to supoprt eimi dikalos," Beasley RD Nicky Ward said.
