Omnibus awarded Best Overall Newspaper by MCMA

Competing against seven other collegiate newspapers, the Omnibus won the award for Best Overall Newspaper in Division 3 competition at the Missouri College Media Association Convention and awards banquet. The ceremony was held April 3 in St. Louis.

"Winning Best Overall Newspaper was a great honor," senior Editor in Chief Jennifer Harris said. "We were competing with schools twice our size that have journalism deparments. We always strive to be professional, this award shows our work paid off."

Seven members of the Omnibus staff, along with adviser Chris Keller, represented Southwest Baptist University at the conference and banquet.

Along with the overall award, several SBU students placed in individual competitions.

Senior Aarik Danielsen and recent graduate J.R. Madill received second place in editorial writing. Recent graduate Brian Roe received an honorable mention award for editorial writing and also took first and third places in advertising design.

Junior Joseph Jackson took second place and an honorable mention award for sports column writing, and junior Austin Bunn won third place in sports writing.

Freshman Audrey Garrett won second place in news photography while senior Mandy Waller received an honorable mention award in the same category. Freshman Josh Lawrence won second place in sports photography.

Senior Sarah Mann took first place and an honorable mention award for her editorial cartoons and received an honorable mention for an entertainment cartoon.

In a joint effort, junior Nathan Wright and sophomore Elizabeth Moore won third place for front page design, while junior Diana Jordan received an honorable mention for best sports page.

Online co-editors Harris and sophomore Matt Sneed (currently serving in the military) took the first place prize for best online edition web page.

In the overall sweepstakes, the Omnibus received an honorable mention.

"I can't say enough about our staff," Keller said. "They work long hours to ensure we put out a quality publication for SBU. It's good to see them get the recognition they deserve."

Other colleges and universities competing with SBU in the newspaper competition were: Avila College, Culver-Stockton College, Columbia College, Evangel University, Park University, Fontbonne University and Stephens College.

"I learned a lot at MCMA," managing editor Nathan Wright said. "I'm excited about implementing the things I learned into the Omnibus so we can make it even better and beat all those big schools with journalism departments."

Ho hum. Yet another certificate to hang in the O-bus office. Are we running out of room yet? Lol.
