Student body treasurer, senior George Smith leads the Budget and Finance Committee. The committee consists of the treasurers of each class, two members of SGA, and two students who are not a part of SGA. The responsibility of the committee is to allocate money from the student activity fee to all SBU chartered clubs and organizations.
"Any chartered organization or special project on the SBU campus may apply for student activity fee funds," Smith said. "All they have to do is complete the application process like anybody else, have a hearing with the Budget and Finance Committee, and the committee will make its decision as to how much to allocate."
At the hearing the committee interviews the applicant and decides how much of the total funds allotted will go to their club or organization.
This year several new organizations or clubs requested funds. One such club was the SBU Spirit Club, which is led by Housing Coordinator Chris Keller.
"This club will be SBU's version of a pep or spirit club as seen at a number of different colleges and universities across the country," Keller said. "The club's purpose will be to promote school spirit through student attendance, involvement and support of SBU's NCAA athletic teams."
The new club did not receive as much money as they had requested but are still satisfied with the amount.
"The funds received ($750) will be used to purchase such items as club t-shirts, spirit towels and other items that the club will use at SBU athletic events through the coming school year," Keller said.
Another new organization asking for funds was the Student Task Force, headed by Professor of Education Dr. Janet Juhlin. The Student Task Force is a group of students dedicated to helping incoming students by providing support, prayer and fellowship.
"We will use our funds to help us develop an orientation video for students who are not able to come to Welcome Week or who begin in January," Juhlin said. "We also are planning some service projects and support activities for them."
The Student Task Force also did not receive as much money as they had requested.
"We are happy with the amount of money we received," Juhlin said. "We have been working with no funding, so this will help greatly."
With almost a $2,000 increase, Emerging Musicians United received considerably more money than the previous year. According to senior Kyle Smith, EMU treasurer, the increase was due their new location in Ingman Hall.
"We hope to renovate Ingman Hall within our limits and buy recording equipment to assist in the demo creating for bands in EMU," Smith said. "We spent all that we had this year and could have spent more because we gained building space in Ingman Hall."
