After day one of the Southwest Baptist University golf team's first action of the 2004 Spring Season, the Heart of America Golf Classic in Warrensburg, the Bearcats were sitting ninth out of 12 teams and senior Dusty Smith was tied for fourth place overall.

The Bearcats went on to maintain their position on the leader board on day two of the tournament and finished ninth overall.

Smith finished tied for 10th overall and junior Nick Layman tied for 16th.

"We have higher expectation as a team," SBU Head Coach Kevin Cribbs said. "Dusty and Nick are two of the better players in the MIAA conference."

The next stop for the Bearcats was the Missouri Western Invitational, which hosted 13 teams.

The duo of Smith and Layman led the way for the Bearcats, who placed 10th in the Invitational's team standings. Smith and Layman each recorded a two-day total of 144, placing them in a tie for third place overall.

SBU's final regular season tournament was the Iron Horse in Kansas City, Mo. April 12 and 13. After the first round of competition, Smith was on top of his game, leading the field in the District Five Regional Tournament by shooting a 73.

The Bearcats will travel to Lawrence, Kan. April 19-20 to play in the MIAA Championship Tournament.

"We have to play our best," Cribbs said. "We should finish in the top four as a team and are also sitting in good position to make the regional tournament in Kentucky at the end of the season."
