Chapel should include more student speakers

Dear Editor,
After enjoying the student run women's conference this weekend, I have come to wonder why Southwest Baptist University chapels do not feature more student speakers.

I was thoroughly impressed by those who shared at the conference over the weekend. Senior Brenda Boswell spoke all three nights and I was moved by her openness and sincerity. Several other students gave brief testimonies. These women were unafraid to share their experiences, reveal their brokenness and express their faith with fellow students. The issues they discussed were relevant and applicable to my life. Several women were moved to tears, and I am sure all those who attended were touched in some way.

What I have described is a far cry from what I have felt in chapel.

I have rarely been moved or challenged by chapel. I do believe a significant proportion of guests should be those with experience and maturity. There is obvious importance to inviting pastors, professors, philosophers and Christian apologists and we should not get rid of them.

But why do we not have more current students speak in chapel? Why do we not ever hear our own peer group share their stories, experiences and insights?

I think there is something powerful and inspiring in hearing about the lives of fellow young people and learning about their walk with God. I want to be moved in chapel like I was by the honest and real young women who spoke over the weekend.
