According to Dr. Greg Fiebig, SBU director of theatre, the play tells the story of Vivian Bearing, a middle-aged intellectual with ovarian cancer. In less than two hours, Vivian takes the audience through the discovery of her terminal illness and the dying process.
While the subject matter of the play is grim, author Margaret Edson tests the wits of the audience with clever dialogue, beautiful poetry and humor. "Wit" is an insightful and incredible literary work, but it is not intended for all audiences and contains some mature themes.
The theatre department welcomes back to the stage senior Amy Davison in the lead role as Vivian Bearing. Returning thespians are junior Mark Miller in the role of Dr. Jason Posner and sophomore Candace Orrino as Susie Monahan. Double cast as Dr. Harvey Kelekian are Fiebig and freshman Matthew Overturf. Double cast of E.M. Ashford are SBU English professor Susan Guymon and freshman Sarah Lewis.
Other cast members include: senior Bill Jefferson, sophomores Patrick Wright, Chaz Bell and Marco Kirven and freshmen Briannon Scott and Michelle Felder.
Doors open for "Wit" at 6:30 p.m. each evening and performances begin promptly at 7 p.m. There will be an additional performance on May 2 at 2 p.m. Proceeds from this performance will benefit The American Cancer Society. Tickets for shows on April 29, 30 and May 1 are $4 for reserved seating, $5 at the door, $1 for SBU students and $3 for alumni. SBU faculty and staff will be admitted for free.
