Homecoming festivities provide week of excitement

Senior Dwayne Pano hosted the event and started Chapel by telling everyone to "get krunked."
The men and women of Woody-Gott Hall took first place, Memorial Hall placed second, and the Beasley Babes, who stressed the need for pink, rather than purple, came in a close third.
"I thought it was a great chance to show school spirit, while at the same time, having a good time," Landen Hall freshman Brett Roberts said. "There were many exciting performances and excellent artistic and musical talents in each dorm. I enjoyed the competition between each dorm. It made it more exciting."
Students had the opportunity to meet the fall sports players during the first ever "Meet the Players Night," held Wednesday in the Goodson Student Union.
On Thursday, SBU's Pike Auditorium was filled with students and student talent, during the annual Talent Show. Junior Chris Miller and Dr. Bing Bayer hosted the event. Talent entries consisted of a mix of everything, from duet singing to poetry to spiritual dancing.
The Spiritual Gangsters took first place in the talent show, while the trio of Chris Fryear, Megan Ross and Nate Wilson, took second. Junior Terry Jones, accompanied by Chaz Bell, claimed third.
Other activities held during the week included the always popular bed races. Held Friday, the annual races saw Landen and Beasley Halls claim first place in the male and female dorm divisions, respectively.
nother first for SBU homecoming activites, was a great success as was the Friday night pep rally at the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center.
One damper during the week was the cancellation of the traditional bonfire due to heavy rain that hit campus Friday night.
Friday night was also a sleepless night for some students, both on and off-campus as they made preparations for the Saturday morning "Paint the Town Purple" Homecoming parade.
"I loved Homecoming this year," off-campus senior Ben Clay said. "I didn't think they did a lot to incorporate off-campus students this year. I think off-campus students should be involved more."
One of the final Homecoming events was the ever-popular and fun Homecoming Parade. Townspeople gathered around the streets as floats, bands, and cars traveled through the city..
Woody-Gott Hall claimed first place in the dorm float competition. Memorial Hall took second, Maupin Hall nabbed third and Beasley Hall received Honorable Mention.
The 2004 SBU Homecoming festivities ended with the football homecoming game against the University of Missouri-Rolla. In the game, the Bearcats claimed victory with a 52-14 final score.
As is with any large production or activity, SBU's 2004 Homecoming committee deserves a great deal of credit. Jordan Layman, Courtney Davis, Emily Barlow and others worked hard to help make this year's Homecoming a great success.
"We have been working on this since the beginning of the school year and I am really happy with the results and how well everything flowed' said Davis, director of student activities.
Barlow, assistant director of atudent activitues. was also pleased with the outcome.
"Homecoming was a great success," she said. The attendance at all the events was better than ever."
Layman agreed with Davis and Barlow.
"Overall, I'm very proud of this year's Homecoming and I'm very impressed with SBU," she said.
