Wellness Center opens its doors

Southwest Baptist University's newest campus adition, the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center, opened its' doors to the campus community for the first time on Monday, Oct. 4.

The Center offers several activities and sports facilities and numerous exercise options, including weight rooms.

Access to the facility is currently limited to students and full-time faculty and staff who gain entry through use of an ID card. ID cards are also needed to check out equipment, which includes basketballs, eye guards and rock-climbing items.

On Nov. 1, dependents of students, faculty and staff can apply for membership. Forms may be picked up on the Center's second floor. SBU alumni and the Bolivar community may also apply for use of the facility beginning Nov. 1.

Current graduate students access is restricted to those who have chosen to pay the student activity fee.

With construction not completely finished, only certain areas of the Center are accessable. These areas include the exercise rooms, racquetball courts and intramural gymnasium.

The Center is open everyday of the week, from 6 to 12 a.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

The rock climbing wall is available for use Monday-Friday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The rock climbing wall is available from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays.

The SBU natatorium, also located within the Center, is currently closed, and is scheduled to open Nov. 15.

The SBU Athletic Department and sports teams have priority in the Intramural gym on weekdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and other times as needed. After 6 p.m., students will have access to at least one court, provided there is no SBU women's volleyball match scheduled.

The exercise room has a maximum capacity of 30 people and access will be monitored by fitness staff. The Control Desk, located in the fitness area, will keep a waiting list

The exercise room will also be divided into two sides, one for men and the other for women from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Some equipment rental fees do apply. Rock climbing shoes and chalk bags each cost $1 per session.

Reservations for the racquetball courts can be made 24 hours in advance by calling 328-1418.
