For the last few years the African country Sudan has been demolished by a horrifying civil war. The northern part of Sudan is predominately Muslim and of Arab descent. However, the southern region of Sudan is made up of Christian and pagan believers, but the war is not only religious, it is racial. The race of the southern Sudanese is predominately black African and non-Arab. The radical Arabs and Muslims of the north mercilessly attacked the southern Sudanese people and innocent humans have been murdered.

Why am I writing about something that is taking place over thousands of miles away from the United States? It is because I believe the American people and government should do something about this humanitarian crisis. Villages have been left in ashes, women young and old have been raped and 30,000 people have already been killed or have died from the resultingdisease and hunger in the last year. Hundreds of thousands of others are in imminent danger due to the war, massacres, displacement, disease, hunger, relative neglect of the outside world and the difficulties in reaching people in need. Why is the outside world turning a blind eye to this genocide?

The northern militia is ruthless and malicious. They have burned crops, polluted and destroyed water sources and have looted the unsuspecting villages. These actions will inevitably lead to the displacement and starvation of innocent lives.

On a more positive note, the southerners have formed their own defense -- The Sudan People's Liberation Army. However, this will not be enough to take on the brutal north. Sudan needs massive amounts of humanitarian aid and support. Sudan needs a defender and advocate. If the United States can spend billions of dollars on a war against an evil Iraqi dictator, why cannotwe send help to Sudan? Sudan has been under fire for over 11 years -- why haven't we done anything?

I urge all of my peers, professors and administrators to pray for this war-wrecked country and people. Pray that the relentless war will come to an ened. Pray that families will be restored and healed. Pray for children who have lost parents, siblings and relatives. Pray for wives who have lost husbands and husbnads who have lost wives. Pray for the governments to seek God's face and come to know him. Pray that persecuted Christians will not be discouraged, pray that they will be edified by those around them. Pray that Sudanese Christians will continue to be a witness and light for our Savior, even in tummultuous times. Pray that International countries will recognize this crisis and offer their aid, support and labor.
