Reaching the golden milestone of 50 years is an accomplishment to be celebrated. We have all been to wedding anniversaries and other get-togethers that celebrate the remarkable 50 year mark. Some of you may not know Southwest Baptist University had a reason to celebrate the 50-year mark this past weekend.

Maupin Hall is celebrating its 50-year anniversary this year.
One of SBU's male dorms is celebrating their 50th year of existence this school year. Maupin Hall has reached the golden mark, and has anyone made it a point to at least acknowledge it? I was (and am) honestly unhappy and discouraged to see nothing acknowledging Maupin's birthday. Now, it may seem silly for me to be upset at something that seems minute. But, Maupin has been my home at SBU, and I have grown to love this dorm and its men as Christian brothers.

I am sure you have seen the wonderful Maupin men and the great traditions held every year. Maupin men are great men of God. Maupin is known for its togetherness and unique brotherhood. Simply put, Maupin is a unique, God-desiring, united dorm. For SBU to show little or no acknowledgements in our turning 50 years old is, in my opinion, wrong.

Maupin has a long history of excellent Christian service. No public display of celebration tells me that the dorm is, as I have said numerous times before, overlooked, not cared about and forgotten. How can Maupin's great accomplishment be overlooked or not celebrated? My bet is that, if and when another dorm turns 50 years old, a celebration will be in the works. So why not Maupin? Why should the great dorm be forgotten?

Now I am not upset because a huge blow-out party was not given. Do not get me wrong. I do not expect or want a large party. However, I feel Maupin has been wronged. We may not be the most liked dorm on campus, and we may not be close to campus, but Maupin, like anything else that reaches the 50-year mark, deserves to be recognized.

I have been here only seven semesters, so I do not know a lot about the previous 40-plus years. But I do know Maupin has a great history. SBU would not be SBU without Maupin Hall.

Perhaps Maupin should have thrown a party for themselves and invited others to join them instead of waiting aruod to be served.

I lived in Maupin for 3.5 years and I loved every minute of it. Maupin Hall is a great place to live. For Maupin to have held its own party to celebrate itself would in my opinion, have been very un-Maupin like. (Continued…)
