Roy Blunt, representing Missouri's Seventh Congressional District, won easily in his bid for re-election. The incumbent Republican defeated Jim Newberry, his Democrat challenger, garnering over 70 percent of the vote in his district to Newberry's 28 percent.
The majority whip in Congress since November 2002, Blunt served as president of his alma mater, SBU, from 1993-1996. Blunt earned a B.A. in history in 1970 and also served on the SBU Board of Trustees. Like his son, Matt, Blunt ran for governor in 1992, but was defeated in the August Primary Election by William Webster, his Republican challenger.
Blunt's son Matt was also victorious. The 33-year-old Republican defeated Democrat challenger and State Auditor Claire McCaskill in the Missouri Governor's race. Blunt received almost 51 percent of the vote with McCaskill garnering just over 47 percent. He becomes the state's second youngest governor with only Christopher "Kit" Bond taking the office at a younger age.
Bond, one of Missouri's State Senators, was re-elected for a fourth term Tuesday. The incumbent Republican defeated Democrat challenger Nancy Farmer, capturing 56 percent of the vote to Farmer's 42 percent.
