Give us a break

Dear Editor,
I'm a Mellers Dining Commons employee and I'm really frustrated with the way some people treat the facility and those who work there. We work hard to serve food and get very little credit or assistance from the students.
Most of the time all we hear are complaints about the serving sizes or the type of food. Well, ya know what? Serving sizes would be larger if most of the food didn't end up going down the drain because people didn't eat what they got. If they want to know what's going to be served, there is a weekly list in the Omnibus. If they don't like what's being served on a certain day, don't eat there or plan to eat a waffle or salad.
We also get frustrated with the way folks leave the place after they've eaten. The dishes and trash don't always make it to the dishroom, which leaves us to wonder if students are capable of picking up after themselves. It also seems to be a favorite pastime to empty salt and pepper shakers onto the table and disfigure the silverware.
Now we come to the dishroom. The poor souls who work there remain in a hot, stinky, wet room for two-and-half to three hours a meal, dumping uneaten food off plates into a trough of water. Trays piled with trash make the dishroom job even more unpleasant. Trash cans are provided, we just wish people would use them.
Mellers' employees work during the times most students are relaxing and eating with friends, this gives us virtually no down time. It's not easy to serve hundreds of people everyday - we are simply doing our job. Please give us a break!
