Southwest Baptist University will be hosting its first Relay for Life Kickoff Party at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 in Meyer Recital Hall at the Casebolt Center for Fine Arts.

The SBU Relay for Life organizers have a goal to raise $30,000 towards the fight against cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society Web site, "Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools and take turns walking or running laps.

The actual SBU relay will take place April 29-30, 2005. At this time, Micah Beebe, team captain coordinator, said the focus is on developing teams for the event. A typical relay team is made up of 8-15 people, and the teams are welcome to go to the Relay for Life Kickoff Party.

Beebe also said, "Each team member is required to raise $100," before the Relay takes place in April. At the Kickoff Party, Beebe will be educating relay team captains in fundraising techniques.

Beebe finds that Relay for Life is a good thing to do because, "Everybody, one way or another, is affected by cancer. My great grandmother has cancer, and several other family members have it as well. When I think about what I'm doing...and putting in the time - and helping in the fight against cancer - it's pretty exciting to be part of something like that."

SBU's April Relay will be the first Relay for Life to take place at the University. The SBU Relay for Life effort began with a presentation made earlier this year by an SBU student. Cancer survivor, junior Kendra Dotson, was required to present a class project that she would like to do one day. She chose Relay for Life, and eventually made it a reality.

Senior Annie Blankenship is in charge of Relay Kickoff Party. For more information about the party and Relay, call Blankenship at 777-8306.
