Southwest Baptist University's "A" team claimed top honors at the Association of Computing Machinery programming contest held Nov. 6 at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

SBU seniors Pam Clodfelter and Jeremy Matheny and junior Danny Miller combined their programming and problem-solving skills to finish ahead of 22 other Missouri teams, earning the title of the best collegiate programmers in Missouri.

"In the five-hour competition, our 'A' team finished almost an hour ahead of second place. You've got to be pretty happy with that," Tim DeClue, coach and chair of the department of computer and information sciences said. "This finish is incredible and such a blessing.

Many of the schools we compete against have graduate programs in computer science, and the rules allow graduate students to compete. This year, not even the schools with Ph.D. programs could pull off a win over SBU."

SBU's 'B' team, finished 11th in the state. Team members included senior Vicki Martin, sophomore Jeremy Pruett and freshman Michael Van Devender.

The ACM programming contest is the first competition the SBU teams face each year. This year's first place finish was the best ever in school history in that event.

Second place honors went to the College of the Ozarks 'A' team. Washington University placed third, with SMSU teams one and two placing fifth and sixth, respectfully. The 'A' team from the University of Missouri-Rolla finished sixth.

Next for SBU's ACM is the Second Annual Computer and Information Sciences Championships. The SBU-hosted contest will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at the Taylor National Free Enterprise Center.
