The Southwest Baptist University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional held Nov. 6 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. Both teams failed to advance to the national meet, but there were some good individual efforts at the meet.

The Lady Bearcats finished in eighth place overall. The individual performance of the day came from sophomore Amy Broadhurst who finished in 10th place with a time of 22 minutes, 50 seconds.

"To be all-regional is outstanding," SBU Head Coach Mark Misch said. "She could compete well on the national scene."

Junior Christine Showler finished in 27th place with a time 23 minutes, 38 seconds. Junior Jenny Doke and freshmen Lisa Hicks and Alyssa Maggart rounded out SBU's top five, finishing 51st, 75th and 76th, respectively.

"I would have liked to beat Emporia State and Northwest Missouri State, but we did okay," Misch said.

The SBU men's team struggled in the race, finishing 14th out of the 15 competing teams. Seniors Austin Bunn and Tom Miner took the top two spots for SBU. Bunn finished 40th with a time of 33 minutes, 42 seconds while Miner came in 66th at 34 minutes, 40 seconds.

Misch had a simple explanation for the men's performance, "We didn't do very well."

Senior Brandon Sherrer, junior Corey McElhaney and sophomore Brian Winckler came in 73rd, 86th and 93rd, respectively. Juniors Mike Haub and Andy Joggerst finished 96th and 98th.
