The weekend of Feb 1-3, 10 Southwest Baptist University speech and debate competitors traveled to Kansas Wesleyan University to compete in an annual tournament. Twenty-two colleges and universities from five states participated in the weekend competition. The tournament featured 11 individual speech events.
Representatives from SBU included: seniors Nathan Ross, David Van Bebber, Sean McCormack, Amy Bopp, juniors Shannon Klousia, Jessica Kershner, Josh Erickson, sophomores Vandi Eslit, Tony Melton and freshman Rebecca Koe.
In the overall sweepstakes calculation, SBU finished in fourth place.
"The finish represents a lot of hard work and superior attitudes on the part of our speakers," said Dr. Bob Derryberry, senior professor of Communication Arts. "This has been a year of rewarding, rebuilding and significant growth for us. We have had our difficulties with weather and January term obligations, but our scholars have pulled together in excellent strength to begin this semester."
The SBU team earned a number of outstanding honors and finishes. Van Bebber was awarded second place in the pentathlon competition. The top six students are given this award for their excellence in speaking and interpretation throughout the tournament. Van Bebber also finished second in dramatic interpretation and third in communication analysis.
Other honors include Ross earning fifth in Program Oral Interpretation and first in duo interpretation with his colleague Kershner. Ross also placed fourth in the Informative Speaking competition.
Koe shared the fifth place honor with her colleague, Erickson for their Duo Interpretation. Koe also earned a sixth place honor in the Poetry Interpretation category.
Erickson received a third place honor in the Informative Speaking category, and shared a fifth place in Duo Interpretation with partner Klousia.
Eslit and Melton were awarded fifth and sixth places in Informative Speaking, respectively, and Bopp won fifth place in Communication Analysis.
The tournament was a growing experience for the SBU Forensics team. This group of talented students put much into their craft over the academic year, and are working to improve on the goals they have accomplished, always striving to bring their best to the podium.
In summary of the tournament, Dr. Josh Compton, chair of the Department of Communication Arts, said, "Our students continued to grow under hardships and scattered locations during the January session. We are very proud of their progress. We know they will continue to grow in our remaining tournaments."
