Fifty-one students competed for the J.R. Maupin Founders Award during Southwest Baptist University's annual Scholar Days, held Saturday, Feb. 3 in Jester Learning and Performance Center and Mellers Dining Commons.
According to Dr. Stephanie Miller, vice president for enrollment management, 50 prospective students were expected to compete for the scholarship. Named after one of the University's founders, the J.R. Maupin Founders Award is recognized as SBU's "most prestigious academic scholarship" according to the official 2006-2007 University Catalogue. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have at least a 3.85 grade-point average and a ACT score of 30-plus or a SAT score of 1340-plus.
On Friday, Feb. 2, an estimated 65 families came for Academic / Athletic Day, an event hosted by the SBU Football program. About 60 families were expected for the day. Prospective student athletes and their families were able to tour the campus, eat lunch and visit with various professors from the University's academic colleges.
SBU will welcome more future Bearcats during the University's annual Bearcat Days, Sunday and Monday, Feb. 18-19. Student hosts are still needed to house prospective students who will be coming in for overnight stays. For more information on Bearcat Days, contact Housing Coordinator Chris Keller at 328-1825 or e-mail ckeller@sbuniv.edu.
