The music department of Southwest Baptist University wants to challenge high school students to "Go Deep This Summer!" at Christian Summer Music Camp. The SBU campus will play host to the music camp June 3-9.
High school students who have completed grades nine through 12 are invited to take part in the camp, which will include classes, lessons, rehearsals, concerts and fun activities.
The camp was completely planned and designed from within the Department of Music at SBU.
"Originally, a music faculty committee was organized to flesh out a proposal for a summer music camp," said Dr. Jeff Waters, professor of music and department chair. "The entire SBU music faculty then discussed and approved the proposal last fall, and from that point, the logistics of the camp are being administered by myself and Dr. William Brown, dean of Casebolt College of Music, Arts and Letters."
Students may participate in two of three major ensembles offered. Dr. Brian Hopwood, director of instrumental studies, will conduct band and orchestra, and Dr. James Tarrant, director of choral studies, will conduct choir.
Other classes offered include Ear Training, Beginning Theory, Piano Basics, Conducting, Church Music, Computers and Music and Jazz Improvisation. Master classes in piano, voice and instruments will also be offered. SBU music faculty will teach all classes.
"A main thrust of the camp will be the large ensemble experiences - choir, band and orchestra," said Waters. "There will also be organized times of devotion and spiritual reflection and some fun activities such as a talent show, swimming and other social activities."
Concerts will take place every night at camp with performances by SBU faculty and the student staff. Campers are encouraged to sign up to perform for the evening concerts as the week progresses. The camp will culminate in a large concert featuring the three major ensembles: band, choir and orchestra.
The students will be housed in the resident halls and eat in Mellers Dining Commons, both of which are included in the camp fee of $260. The camp fee for commuter students is $200. Class materials, two master classes and a camp T-shirt are also included.
"It will be our intent to plan performances and other experiences that challenge each student, and that help them reach beyond what they are able to do as a part of a routine experience at their schools and churches," said Waters. "For teachers, it is always a pleasure to get to know the aspiring young musicians in our area and to share with them what kinds of musical experiences are available to them at SBU as they begin to think about continuing their music training at the college level. If each camper takes away from the camp a positive and exciting slice of the SBU experience, then we will feel that we have accomplished our mission with this camp."
