Issue date: 2/9/07 Section: News
Two honorary doctorates, tenure for four professors, six promoted professors, salary increases, a balanced budget and a working agreement with a Russian University - all were part of the annual February meeting of Southwest Baptist University's Board of Trustees.
At the Feb. 5-6 meeting, the Board voted to establish and approve a working agreement with Tomsk State University (TSU). Located in Tomsk, Russia, TSU - formally Imperial Tomsk University - was founded in 1878 and is the first ever university established in the Russian region of Siberia.
The University has 22 departments with an enrollment of 23,000 students. Dr. Bob Klostermeyer, assistant professor of political science; Dr. Vickie Ellis, professor of education, and Dr. Ray Leininger, a trustee and former pastor of First Baptist Church of Bolivar, recently traveled to TSU where they helped negotiate the agreement.
In other business, the Board voted to confer honorary doctorates to Norma Bishop and Charles Graham.
Bishop, a 1936 Southwest Baptist graduate and long-time school teacher, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education. A switchboard operator at SBU's Sells Administrative Center for the past seven years, Bishop was named the Outstanding Older Worker of the Ozarks for 2006. She will celebrate her 90th birthday July 7.
"Norma is possibly the finest older employee I have worked with in my entire career," said SBU President Dr. C. Pat Taylor after Bishop's nomination. "She appears to have all the drive, vitality, enthusiasm and school spirit of any 20-year-old at our University. Norma is a highly energetic, intelligent and reliable worker. She interacts exceptionally well with all our students and employees and the other constituents served by our University."
Graham, who maintains a worldwide music ministry, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music Ministry. According to Taylor, Graham is the first African-American to receive an honorary doctorate at SBU.
In recognition of University faculty, the Board bestowed tenure on four professors. Dr. James Smith, associate professor of history; Dr. James Tarrant, associate professor of music; Dr. Dave Bennett, associate professor of evangelism, and Dr. Vickie Ellis, professor of education, were granted tenure.
