Many campuses state-wide are putting forth a healthy effort to improve school wellness programs. There are individuals who are passionate about their students becoming more educated about personal health. They are passionate about their campuses making the decision to stick to their fitness plans and now, thanks to people like senior Chris Martin, Southwest Baptist University is doing the same.
Noticing a need for an overhaul of the campus wellness program, Martin, along with Jason Hines, Meyer Wellness and Sports Center supervisor, and J.D. Lynch, director of Meyer Wellness and Sports Center,, is spearheading a brand new idea.
'Cats Health Assessment Motivation Program, or CHAMP, is a program devoted to giving accurate assessments of individuals' overall wellness. Much like the test given in the Fitness / Wellness class, CHAMP is a series of tests including instruction on finding target heart rate zones, body mass index (BMI), a one-minute push-up test, a one-minute sit-up test, a sit and reach test for flexibility, a hand grip test and a 12 minute walk / run.
CHAMP is available to all students and faculty on campus, as well as those in the Bolivar community who are members of the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center. The results of the CHAMP test are kept on file at the Wellness Center and are strictly confidential.
Also, the staff at the Wellness Center is implementing the use of fitness logs. These logs document individuals' personal work-out plan and is kept on file at the desk in front of the weight room.
There are points awarded for using the fitness logs. One point will be awarded for at least 30 minutes of work out time logged. There is only opportunity to earn one point a day, however, so, for example, two 30 minute sessions will still only earn one point. These points will be logged for a "member of the month" award. Categories are said to include students, faculty / staff and paid members of the Wellness Center.
