SBU celebrates Black History

Da Vine Student Ministry has a week full of activities planned for the celebration of Black History Month on the Southwest Baptist University campus beginning Monday, Feb. 19.
The festivities will kick off with Hype Dance Ministry Group performing in Chapel Monday. Hype will also hold a concert that evening at 7:30 p.m. in Pike Auditorium.
The second annual Fashion Showcase will take place in Goodson Student Union at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20.
All day Wednesday, Feb. 21, educational displays will be set up in the Union. These displays will showcase the accomplishments of a variety of various African Americans.
Various music talents, interpretive dance, poetry and book readings will all take place at Café Noir at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 in the Union. Free hot chocolate and coffee will be provided.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23. All students, faculty and staff are invited to march in the parade. Those wishing to march will meet at the Union at 9 a.m. The parade will conclude with a reading of King's "I Have a Dream" speech and prayer around the flagpole.
The parade will be followed by a cake and punch reception / commemoration outside Mellers Dining Commons.
The concluding event of the Black History Month celebration will actually take place in March. A Soul Food Potluck is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, March 4 at Wellspring Baptist Fellowship. Students, faculty and staff wanting to attend are asked to bring one side dish. Those attending should RSVP to Amy Welch, director of Residence Life, at awelch@sbuniv.edu or 328-1826.
