MCMA President duties include sending out weekly e-mails, keeping track of entries received, managing dues, planning the actual convention and banquet, locating speakers, coordinating workshops and communicating with the Missouri Press Association.
The home school of the MCMA President is also the convention's host school for that year. Also from SBU, sophomore Jessica Oliver holds the office of vice president. MCMA Secretary Michelle Oyola is a student at Webster University.
"MCMA is an organization for all college publications to come together and learn together, but also compete against each other," said Browning.
Held at the Lodge of the Four Seasons at the Lake of the Ozarks, the MCMA Annual Spring Convention's activities will include writing seminars, workshops, guest speakers and an awards banquet.
The main event of the convention will be the awards banquet. Editors, writers, photographers and advisors prepare and perfect their work for the whole year in order to earn nominations for awards in various writing, photography and design categories.
Awards categories include: Best Feature Writing, Best News Writing, Best Column, Special Section, Best News Photography, Best Editorial, Best Sports Writing, Best Comic, Best Entertainment Review, Best Online Newspaper, Best Graphic Design, Best Overall Newspaper, Journalist of the Year, Photojournalist of the Year and Advisor of the Year.
There are several entries turned in by the Omnibus, including Best Overall Newspaper and Best Special Section. Also, the Omnibus has nominated two candidates for Journalist of the Year (Browning and senior Ben Nielen), as well as a candidate for Photojournalist of the Year (junior Zach Henderson). Most of the Omnibus staff is nominated in various categories, and 10 representatives of SBU will attend the convention.
Past Omnibus awads include Best Overall Newspaper in Division III (2004), Advisor of the Year (Chris Keller, 2005), reigning Sweepstakes champions (since 2005) and 27 awards were won at last year's convention in St. Louis.
"I feel really confident about all of the Omnibus' entries this year," said Browning. "We have a lot of solid writing and visuals, as well as a solid paper across the board."
