The Lady Bearcats took on two opponents last week adding a win and a loss to their record.
On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Lady Bearcats basketball team took on the sixth ranked team in the MIAA, the Missouri Southern Lady Lions. The Bearcats had a tough night from the field on the offensive side. The 'Cats shot cold, scoring only free throws until was 13:30 left in the first half when they connected on their first points from the field.
To start the game, the Lions went on a 19 to six run in the first 10 minutes. However, they went on a cold steak for the next six minutes without recording another field goal.
In the first half, the Lady 'Cats shot zero of nine from behind the three-point line, and did not improve much in the second half, only shooting two of 13 and nine percent for the game. It did not help that Missouri Southern was the polar opposite for the game by shooting of seven of 11 (63 percent) from behind the 3-point line for the game.
SBU struggled from the field for the game, shooting a total of 16 of 56 (28 percent) from the floor, while Missouri Southern's shooting was better by 23 of 52 (44 percent).
"You can't let your shooting dictate what happens. Give Southern credit; they played with a lot of intensity," said Head Coach Jim Middleton.
Leading the Lions in scoring included sophomore Danielle DeVader putting up 15 points, junior Robin Kantin with 13 points, and adding 12 was junior Fatai Hala'Api'Api, who also grabbed 12 rebounds.
For the Lady 'Cats, the top scorers were junior Erika Souza putting up 12 points and sophomore Courtney Shewmaker with 10 points.
SBU put up 25 points fewer than their season average of 73 points against Southern, only scoring 48 in the game.
"We have to treat every game we play like a championship game. It's there for the taking," said Middleton.
The 'Cats never led in the game, but cut the lead as close as five with the score 27 to 32 in favor of Southern with 17 minutes remaining in the game. The free throw shooting had a big affect on the comeback. The comeback wasn't enough for the Lady 'Cats to climb back in the game at the end, falling 48-65.
With the loss, SBU falls to 12-10 on the season and 4-10 in the MIAA, Missouri Southern improved to 5-9 in the MIAA and 12- 10 overall.
"We've got to look ahead," said Middleton.
The Fort Hays State Tigers came to Bolivar Tuesday night for another MIAA battle. In the first meeting between the two on Jan. 6 the Lady 'Cats won in a nail bitter, 86-85. Tuesday, the 'Cats looked for a chance to gain a spot in the MIAA Tournament. Both teams tied for seventh place in the MIAA standings. The losing team, falling to ninth place, would face a tough climb back into contention for a spot in the MIAA Tournament.
