After a 7-2 loss to Harding in their season-opener last year, the Southwest Baptist men's tennis returned the favor this year, blasting the Bison 8-1 in the Bearcats' Feb. 9 season-opening dual-meet in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The 'Cats took five of six matches from the Bison in singles. SBU's top player, freshman Alex Kacamakis, the 15th-ranked player in NCAA Division II, won 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets. Also achieving straight-set victories were sophomore Emilio El Alabi (6-3, 6-3), junior Daniel Prerad (6-2, 7-5), Agustin Mollar (6-3, 6-3) and Alan Mohadeb (6-3, 6-2). SBU's lone loss came when freshman Micah AuBuchon fell 6-2, 6-0 in the number six singles match.
In doubles, SBU swept all three matches. The 'Cats' top doubles team of Prerad and El Alabi coasted to an 8-2 win with SBU's Kacamakis / Mohadeb and Mollar / AuBuchon pulling out 8-6 and 8-5 decisions, respectively.
With the win, SBU improved to 1-0 on the season while handing Harding (4-1) its first loss.
After the Harding meet, the 'Cats were scheduled to play a second meet that same day against Christian Brothers University. However, due to bad weather conditions in CBU's home state of Tennessee, the meet was canceled.
The following day, the 'Cats had to play consecutive meets against two NCAA Division II nationally-ranked opponents, Delta State (25th) and Ouachita Baptist (5th).
In their meet with Delta State, SBU dropped two of three doubles matches. Prerad / El Alabi netted the 'Cats' lone victory (8-6) while Kacamakis / Mohadeb and Mollar / AuBuchon suffered 8-6 losses.
Needing to win four of their six singles matches, the 'Cats held their own when Kacamakis (6-4, 6-4), El Alabi (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) and Mollar (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) all netted wins in number one, two and four singles. With Mohadeb (2-6, 1-6) and AuBuchon (1-6, 0-6), the 'Cats' number five and six players, falling in straight sets, the meet score was tied 4-4 with the outcome to be decided on Prerad's number three singles match. After losing 3-6 in the first set, Prerad rallied for a 6-2 victory in set two. In the deciding third set, Prerad came up short in a 6-7 loss, giving Delta State a 5-4 win.
