The Tyson Invitational is one of the most prestigious track meets in the nation. This past weekend, Head Coach Jeff DeLong took senior T. Jay Sanderson and the distance medley relay team (DMR) to compete at the Tyson Invitational against some of the world's best.
Sanderson was the only member of the DMR team to compete in an individual event as he took aim at a national qualifying time in the mile. Sanderson won his heat of the mile by clocking four minutes, 10.11 seconds which provisionally qualifies him for nationals and gives him the fifth fastest Division II time in the nation this year (fastest in the MIAA). Overall (not including the invitational mile containing professional runners), Sanderson finished 11th out of 34 competitors, beating runners from Division I universities across the country.
In the DMR, the team of Sanderson, freshmen Jesse Kueker and Shawn Etzenhouser and sophomore Michael Pierce provisionally qualified for nationals as well. Their time of 10 minutes 8.73 seconds broke the school record and was good enough for a ninth place finish ahead of Clemson University.
With Sanderson and the DMR team provisionally qualifying for nationals, SBU has a chance to send four people to the national meet for the first time in SBU's history. To do this, the DMR will have to improve on the time they ran at Tyson as their current time ranks 18th in the country. Sanderson, on the other hand, looks poised to make his second trip to nationals in the mile as it seems his provisional time will get him through.
With the conference meet only a week away, the men will be sending split squads to the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and the other squad to UCM this weekend.
