Freshman Jenny Blair continued her assault on the record book last Thursday night at the Mule Relays by smashing the 600-yard record on her way to a first place finish. Following Blair was fellow freshman Jennifer Gillespie who placed third with a time that also broke the old school record. Rounding out the top 10 finishers in the 600-yard run for SBU was junior Lisa Bunn with a ninth place finish.
Blair now owns the indoor school records in the 200-meter dash, 600-yard run and is part of the school-record-holding 1600-meter relay team.
The amazing part of Blair and Gillespie's story is that it was the first time either of them had ever ran the 600-yards. Both Blair and Gillespie are strictly sprinters and had never raced anything further than 400-meters. Gillespie's time gives her the fifth best time in the conference so far this year, and Blair's time is the second best.
Also running well for the Bearcats was junior Alyssa Maggart who placed third in the 800-meter with a time of two minutes and 20.62 seconds.
In the women's mile, freshman Chelsea Strahm ran her best race of the indoor season, clocking five minutes and 34.38 seconds and finishing ninth.
Freshman Kristen Colon finished eighth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11 minutes and 4.9 seconds. Also finishing in the top 10 was freshman Courtney Ayers who finished sixth in the 5000 meters with a time of 19 minutes and 0.85 seconds.
The Lady Bearcats will continue their season this weekend with half of the team traveling to Lincoln, Neb. and the other half heading back to Warrensburg.
