It was a split decision for the Southwest Baptist women's tennis team last week. The Lady Bearcats opened their 2007 season with a 6-3 win over Ouachita Baptist and a 5-1 loss to nationally-ranked Delta State.
According to SBU Head Coach John Bryant, the Lady 'Cats are off to a good start.
"We competed well," said Bryant. "We're off to a good start, but we have a lot of homework to do."
In their Feb. 9 season-opening meet with Ouachita, SBU captured two of the three doubles and four of the six singles matches. Freshman Jolee Cook, SBU's number two singles player, rallied for a three-set victory (6-7, 6-2, 6-4) after dropping the first set in a 7-2 tiebreaker. Also picking up wins were juniors Chelsey Janzen (6-2, 6-3), Lauren Hodson (6-0, 6-2) and freshman Johanna Olsson (6-0, 6-3). Junior Iveta Wolfgramm, SBU's top singles player, lost 4-6, 4-6 in her match while junior Melanie Ferris fell in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.
In doubles, Wolfgramm and Cook, SBU's top team, lost 8-4, but Janzen / Olson and Hodson / Ferris won their matches 9-7 and 8-1, respectively, giving the Lady 'Cats the 6-3 meet win.
In their Feb. 10 meet with 27th-ranked Delta State, the Lady 'Cats captured one of the three double matches, but were swept in their three completed singles matches. Janzen / Olsson picked up the lone doubles win (9-8) for SBU while Wolfgramm / Cook and Hodson / Ferris fell 8-6 and 8-1, respectively.
In singles, Cook (3-6, 4-6), Janzen (3-6, 4-6) and Olsson (1-6, 5-7) all suffered straight set losses with Wolfgramm trailing 4-6, 3-2 before the match ended. The net result, a 5-1 win for undefeated Delta State (2-0).
"As the weather warms up, so will we," said Bryant. "The more reps we get, the better we will be."
Up next for SBU (1-1) is a 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 dual-meet with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at the YMCA Center in Edwardsville, Ill.
