There will only be a 40-minute game tape and a one minute, 33 second interview with Men's Basketball Head Coach Jeff Guiot that will record Monday night's 74-64 loss to Fort Hays State.
Even though this night will not have much coverage, the making of it took an entire season.
The game itself was not much. Although Southwest Baptist was tied at the half, 27-27, there did not seem to be much energy going into or coming out of halftime. This resulted in several easy baskets for Fort Hays State and a frustrated Guiot and Bearcat team.
Junior Jim Grabowski led all scorers with 20 points.
The story was what happened after the game. A heated locker room exchange, coupled with distraught players and fans fueled an intense aura of frustration in the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center.
"We really don't get any leadership from within," said Guiot. "We don't handle success very well." These were the only comments made by Guiot after the loss.
But leadership did appear to be on the minds of several players as they walked out of the locker room. A growing opinion among Bearcat Nation seems to be that Guiot was the one to blame for the loss, and possibly the season.
Case and point would be the decision to play his two walk-ons starting at the seven minute, 27 second mark of the second-half. The Bearcats were down 15 points at the time. SBU outscored FHSU 22-17 using primarily the backend of their bench during this period.
Guiot could be seen most of the second half with his head buried in his hands and was not nearly as animated on the sidelines as he usually is during the game.
Others will point to Guiot's particularly harsh treatment of freshmen center Matt Rogers and forward Scott Neuhalfen. Some would argue his treatment has been so tough (it may lead to both players leaving next season), while many argue the possible violation of Christian ethics involved in such treatment.
