Hopwood helped set standards nationally and is listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in America. He is an elected member of the American School Band Directors' Association and served as the Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Boulder Concert Band from 2000-2006.
Hopwood earned a Bachelor of Music Education at Oral Roberts University, a Master of Music Education from the University of Colorado, a Diploma of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Music from the University of Calgary, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University.
