Behind the scenes, over 20 models and coordinators hustled and bustled to get everyone dressed, lined up and ready to go before the Walk It Out! Black History Month fashion show Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Goodson Student Union.
The fashion show, produced by Da Vine College Ministry, showcased several genres of style that represent black history and culture.
"We wanted to celebrate our heritage through dress," said junior Elnora Scott, assistant fashion show coordinator.
The models strutted the catwalk to the sounds of approval from the crowd. They sported Southwest Baptist University Bearcat apparel, authentic African clothing, casual clothes, sleepwear, business dress, urban styles and formalwear.
The models included SBU students, students' family members and other volunteers. Former SBU student Linda Scott coordinated the fashion show and junior Korey Molson hosted the event. Several other SBU students also contributed to the planning and coordination of the event. Da Vine expresses thanks to the business that supported them for the show.
"The fashion was sponsored by many different vendors," said Elnora.
The SBU Bookstore provided Bearcat apparel, Maurices provided business dress, Styles supplied the urban attire and Dillard's, along with Deb, sponsored the formalwear.
The fashion show was just one event of the weeklong celebration of Black History Month at SBU. Other activities that took place included Hype Dance Ministry Group performing in Chapel
Monday morning as well as in their own concert Monday night in Pike Auditorium, educational displays in the Union Wednesday and Café Noir Thursday. The last event of the week, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23.
The concluding event for the Black History Month celebration will be a Soul Food Potluck scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, March 4 at Wellspring Baptist Fellowship. Students, faculty and staff wanting to attend are asked to bring one side dish. Those attending should e-mail to Amy Welch, director of Residence Life, at awelch@sbuniv.edu, or call 328-1826.
