The Southwest Baptist University forensics team represented the school at the annual Missouri Association of Forensics Activities (MAFA) tournament Feb. 16-18 at William Jewell College.
According to Dr. Bob Derryberry, director of forensics and senior professor of communication arts, the group failed to accomplish the outcome members celebrated last year.
"In team finishes, the SBU group was outplaced by squads from Drury, Truman and Webster," said Derryberry. "Still, there were significant accomplishments to celebrate."
Junior Sean McCormack and senior David Van Bebber placed second in extemporaneous speaking. Van Bebber also placed second in communication analysis.
Freshman Rebecca Koe and Van Bebber finished fifth in duo interpretation.
Sophomore Vandi Eslit placed fourth in dramatic interpretation and junior Josh Erickson placed third in after dinner speaking.
Junior Daniel Wilson finished sixth in communication analysis and senior Amy Bopp finished fifth in program interpretation.
Though they did not place, other participants from the forensics team incude: seniors Nathan Ross and Ben Burns, juniors Jessica Kershner and Shannon Klousia and sophomore Tony Melton.
The debate teams of Eslit / Klousia and Erickson / Koe advanced to the quarter finals.
The forensics team will compete in the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament March 7-10 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
Hosted by the University of Central Michigan, the team will compete in two types of debate and discussion competitions and 11 events ranging from persuasion and extemporaneous speaking to oral interpretation of poetry and drama.
Derryberry noted gratitude for the team's work in preparation for the long days of competition and the great work of Dr. Josh Compton, chair of the department of communication arts, and SBU graduate Bryan Fisher.
"One of the special features of this year's team is the ability to work under the pressure of time limits," said Derryberry. "Even with a changing and difficult schedule, our speakers have adapted and continued to grow with their events. Dr. Compton and I are proud of their progress."
