If a 69-59 loss can be considered a good thing, this would be the game.
The Southwest Baptist Bearcats, who fell to 15-11 overall and 9-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, played arguably their best game of the season despite the final score. Central Missouri, who extended their home winning streak to 20 games, will play for at least a share of the MIAA title Saturday against Washburn.
Looking at just the stats could be deceiving when evaluating the game. Central Missouri, who played six seniors, starting four on their Senior Night, won the game on the boards by a 48-28 margin. They also dominated the paint scoring 30 of their 69 points in the paint. Central also managed to grab 17 offensive rebounds to SBU's two.
Senior Jared Young, who fouled out with one minute, six seconds left in the game, had 10 points on three of nine shooting, eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Jason Jemison led the team with 14 points, while junior Jim Grabowski added 11.
UCM's senior Zack Wright scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Senior Theo Jones added 19, and senior Darryl Sommerset netted 15.
What seemed to be more important for the Bearcats was their energy and tenacity. SBU was down only five at halftime and were within five points with one minute, 37 seconds left. SBU's inability to get to the free throw line and UCM's 12 second-chance points seemed to do the Bearcats in.
Many of the SBU fans who traveled to Warrensburg felt the Bearcats would have won this game had it been played on a neutral site or in Bolivar.
Head Coach Jeff Guiot declined comment after the game.
However, Guiot did give a radio interview after the game and had this to say: "We've said before the season that rebounding would be the key for us. It's been our 'Achilles Heel' all year. We'll need to improve that area very soon. We feel like we played with a nationally-ranked team all night. We just didn't have a few key shots fall for us down the stretch.
"We're trying to get better. We're trying to get better in time for Kansas City. We feel like we can beat anyone in the league. We just have to keep playing. It was a tough loss tonight, but we'll try and learn from it and get better. It's important that we keep our heads up."
SBU's Senior Night and the regular season finale will be Saturday, Feb. 24 versus Emporia State. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
