Southwest Baptist University's men's track team traveled to Lincoln, Neb. for the Prairie Wolf Invitational last weekend. Again headlining the performances for the men was senior T. Jay Sanderson.
A week after provisionally qualifying for the National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA Division II nationals in the one-mile run, Sanderson competed in the 3000-meter run for the first time this year. Sanderson went out with the pack in the beginning, but left everyone else in his wake as he ran his last mile in four minutes, 22 seconds. Overall, Sanderson's time of 8:24.68 broke his own school record by 21 seconds and allowed him to finish 17 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Also competing in the 3000-meter run were freshmen Jeremy Glassmaker and Michael McCampbell. Glassmaker improved his personal best by crossing the line in 8:49.21 while McCampbell finished in 8:59.17. Glassmaker's time moves him into the top 10 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) heading into the conference championship meet this weekend.
In the 800-meter run, freshman Shawn Etzenhouser ran an indoor personal best of one minute, 55.98 seconds. His time ranks him seventh in the MIAA in the 800-meters.
Competing in the mile for the Bearcats was sophomore Michael Pierce. Pierce won his heat in a time of four minutes, 24.09 seconds and finished 11th overall.
Saturday at the University of Central Missouri Indoor Classic, senior Ben Kirkpatrick smashed his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw by nearly two feet with his throw of 53 feet, .75 inches.
This weekend the men's and women's teams will compete in the MIAA championships on the campus of UCM in Warrensburg, Mo. The 'Cats finished last in the conference in 2006, but have significantly closed the gap with a talented group of freshmen, an improved group of returnees and a healthy Sanderson. This weekend the Bearcats will look to show their improvement by having their highest conference finish in the history of the program.
