Tennis teams triumph in Illinois

It was a doubleheader sweep for Southwest Baptist University's Bearcat and Lady Bearcat tennis teams Saturday, Feb. 17. In their dual meets at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, the 'Cats and Lady 'Cats netted 7-2 and 5-3 wins, respectively, in their final meets of the month.
In the men's meet, SBU captured two of their three doubles and five of their six singles matches.
In number one singles, freshman Alex Kacamakis, ranked 15th nationally in the latest National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Top 25 Poll, took out Doug Kim, his SIUE opponent, in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
SBU also scored wins in its number two through five singles matches. Sophomore Emilio El Alabi (6-0, 6-3), junior Daniel Prerad (6-2, 4-6, 6-3), sophomore Agustin Mollar (6-1, 6-4) and sophomore Alan Mohadeb (6-2, 6-4) were all victorious. The 'Cats' lone loss was at number six singles where freshman Micah AuBuchon fell 3-6, 0-6.
In doubles, Prerad / El Alabi (8-3) and Kacamakis / Mohadeb (8-1), SBU's number one and two teams, respectively, captured wins. Mollar / AuBuchon (5-8), playing at number three doubles, suffered the 'Cats' only loss.
With the win, SBU improved its overall record to 2-2 while dropping SIUE to 0-1.
On the women's side, SBU split their six singles matches. The Lady 'Cats won the number one, two and three matches with junior Iveta Wolfgramm (6-1, 6-3), freshman Jolee Cook (6-1, 6-4) and junior Chelsey Janzen (6-1, 6-1) all getting wins.
In the four, five and six flights, however, the Lady 'Cats came up short in all three matches. At number four singles, freshman Johanna Olsson stubbornly submitted to SIUE's Amanda Niebur (5-7, 6-1, 12-14) with junior Melanie Farris (4-6, 0-6) and sophomore Trish Moceo (0-6, 0-6) falling in the number five and six matches, respectively.
In doubles, victories by Wolfgramm / Cook (8-5) and Janzen / Olsson (8-2) in the number two and three matches halted Farris / Hodson's number three match as SBU took the meet 5-3.
