While the student section on Hammons Court was packed full of students watching an intense men's basketball game, it was also packed full of students waiting in anticipation to see the 2007 Courtwarming King crowned during halftime of the Bearcats' Saturday, Feb. 24 game against Emporia State.
Jaben Houk was crowned Southwest Baptist University's 2007 Courtwarming King in the halftime coronation sponsored by the Student Government Association.
Houk, a biblical studies major, is also the 2006-07 Mr. Southwest at SBU. Houk served as a leader on a recent SBU mission trip to Houston. Junior Laurie Bray escorted Houk at the coronation.
Houk was excited and humbled at the honor.
"Three things [went through my mind]: 'Oh boy, they pronounced my name correctly; there's a first time for everything,'" said Houk. "'I was not paying attention during rehearsal. What do I do next?' [And] 'Oh, God, I'm astounded by the changes you have brought me through over these last years, and God you must have used me in some way to influence at least a few others or I would not be standing here today. Thank you Lord for Your vote of confidence.'"
Houk also had the votes of the student body. A total 157 students voted for the king candidates.
The other king candidates included seniors Lonnie Batson, David Olson, Matt Overturf and Skyler Powers.
Batson, a Christian education major with a business minor, was escorted by senior Abbey Gilmore. Batson served with Houk as a leader on the 2006 mission trip to Houston.
