Southwest Baptist University will host a Songwriters' Showcase at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 in Goodson Student Union. At the coffee house show, students will perform self-written songs in the annual competition.
"This is an opportunity for [the students] to have their song-writing ability heard," said senior Karen Marker, concert chair.
Students who wanted to perform songs were required to file an entry form, provide lyrics and pay $7 for the first song and $5 for every song thereafter, with a three song limit.
Performing students will be judged based on their lyrics, not song-writing ability.
"This is a contest, that's why they're paying to play," said Marker. "They will be judged solely on the lyrics, and the showcase is just an opportunity for them to play in front of people."
"[As of Wednesday, Feb. 28,] we have six entries, and we are expecting two more," said Marker.
Marker and two faculty members plan to judge the songwriters. They will judge at the show, and present the winner during the event.
In years past, first-place prizewinners have won anything from $50 in cash to an opportunity to open for the band Salvador.
This year, there is a promise of $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third place.
