Bryant named to NCAA Division II selection committee

Issue date: 3/2/07 Section: Sports
The spotlight of NCAA athletics is again shining on John Bryant. Southwest Baptist's nationally-acclaimed tennis coach was recently called to serve on the NCAA Division II National Tennis Selection Committee, an eight-member panel that chairs the eight Division II regions in the United States.
"The eight members of the national committee are the chairs of their respective regional committees," said Bryant. "Those regional committees - of which there are eight - are made up of four athletic administrators and / or coaches from schools in their region."
Composed of one representative from each region, the national committee has the final say on which 64 teams should be selected for the men's and women's national tennis tournaments. The committee also determines the 16 regional sites at which the tournaments will be played and sets the rules that govern the tournaments.
Bryant is no stranger to these committees. He was elected to serve back-to-back three-year terms on both the regional and national committees from 1989 to 1995. His placement on those committees in 2007, however, was not by election, but rather by special selection and request.
Bryant's invitation to chair the regional committee came a few days ago when it was determined that Julie Wengert, the elected chair, would be unable to meet her committee obligations. Wengert, who serves as compliance coordinator at Missouri Southern State, is several months pregnant and will return as committee chair after the 2007 national tennis tournaments are completed in May.
Bryant's past experience as committee chair made him a logical choice to represent the region. Bryant's region, the North Central, includes SBU, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and a number of other Midwest schools.
"The men's committee has five members and the women's committee has seven," said Bryant of the North Central committees. "Our mandate is to rank our region's teams in order of strength. Our first criteria is head-to-head matches followed by common opponents and then strength of schedule."
