Freshman Matt Rogers: Something to build a team on
Ben Nielsen
Issue date: 3/2/07 Section: Sports
Rogers, though he is not as bulky as Steyn and Schulze, has figured out how to be more imposing and aggressive while still mixing in his incredible speed and quickness. His mixture of power and finesse along with his lankiness makes him next to impossible to guard. In other words, the kid is a freak.
Rogers could very easily be the best basketball player ever to attend SBU if he chooses to stay here four years.
What makes this so special is Rogers is only a freshman. Not only is he a freshman, but so is fellow freak Scott Neuhalfen, as well as Kendall Frantz. Include sophomores Luke Folkerts, Colt Blair and Andy Wills, who also had 17 points Saturday. This makes for what could possibly be a great core of players for Head Coach Jeff Guiot to build a program around. A program, not a roller coaster sport with random success, but a consistent winner.
Having something like that builds universities into bigger and better institutions. Matt Rogers, it appears, is now officially the cornerstone.

What impresses me most about Matt is that he chose SBU over some D1 schools because he wanted to be at a Christian school where he could be involved in the Lord's work. (Continued…)
