The nationally-ranked Emporia State Hornets came to town last Saturday to round out the home schedule for the Southwest Baptist women's basketball team.
The Bearcats hung within three points in the first five minutes. Then the Hornets went on a 19-10 run, giving them a 10-point lead with five minutes to go in the first half. By the end of the half, the Lady 'Cats cut the lead to eight, 36-28.
In the early minutes of the second half, SBU climbed back within three points and tied the game at 43 each, the second of nine ties on the evening. The Lady 'Cats managed to stay competitive with the Hornets until 8:38 left in the game when the Hornets pulled away for good with a 27-13 run. In the end, SBU fell 82-68.
A huge factor in the game was the free throw differential, with the Lady Hornets shooting 25-33 (75 percent) from the line, to SBU's 10-12 (83 percent).
"Free throws were a major key in the game," said Head Coach Jim Middleton.
Leading the way in scoring for the Lady 'Cats was sophomore Cortney Shewmaker who had a game-high 25 points. Following Shewmaker in scoring for the Bearcats were seniors Livia Brito, 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Amber Wheeler, 13 points and 4 rebounds.
"I feel positive, and I'm really enjoying watching this team play right now," said Middleton, "I don't like to lose, but this team is evolving - and on the way to where we want to be."
Leading Emporia State was junior Michelle Stueve who scored 22 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
"There is no question - we're playing our best basketball right now," said Middleton. "This team is getting better and better - and the girls believe in themselves."
"We're fired up going to Kansas City to face Washburn," said Middleton.
The Lady 'Cats play in the first round of the MIAA tournament at 6 p.m. Friday, March 2, in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium against the Washburn Lady Blues. All fans are encouraged to go and support the Lady 'Cats.
