The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats split a twinbill with Arkansas Tech this week, and moved their record to 3-6 on the season.
The Bearcats' ace junior Zane Montgomery started game one, and pitched well. In 6 2/3 innings, Montomery gave up two earned runs and two walks while striking out six. He took a 4-2 lead into the seventh and final inning, but two costly errors in the outfield yeilded the tying, unearned runs.
SBU won, however, in the bottom of the eighth when junior Josh Baggett singled home senior Kevin Miller with the game-winner. SBU was victorious 5-4 in extra innings.
Sophomore Bobby McMillin (1-0) entered the game in relief and picked up the win.
Game two saw SBU jump out to a 2-0 lead, but ATU tied it in the second, and built a 5-2 lead of their own in the third. The Bearcats tied it in the fourth, but Arkansas Tech went on an offensive rampage with 11 unanswered runs. ATU won this second game, 16-7.
SBU's starter, junior James Ledford (1-2) was charged with the loss. Junior Brad Mountjoy was 3 of 4 in the game with a couple of RBIs.
Coach Sam Berg talked about his pitching after the game.
"For the first time all year, in the second game, I feel like we didn't compete on the mound. Zane pitched well in the first game, we just didn't take care of the ball and cost him a win. In that second game, we just didn't pitch well. We're always looking for five quality innings from our starters and we didn't get it in the second game yesterday. That game was a game that could have gone either way until the last two innings.
"It was encouraging to see that our offense started to wake up. We'll look to continue that in the upcoming games."
SBU's record is 3-6. Their next game is with University of Missouri Rolla on Saturday, March 3.
