Senior Jason Jemison was a little weary about playing on Senior Night, Feb. 24, against Emporia State.
"Coach said he's never really had good Senior Nights," said Jemison.
Fellow senior Jared Young was woozy for another reason; he had the flu.
Jesus Lopez, the third senior on the team, said he was focused.
Whatever the issue was or was not, the Bearcats seniors seemed ready to play in 108-89 Senior Night victory over Emporia.
The three seniors combined for 43 points, 13 assists and 16 rebounds while they guided the Bearcats to what they hope is a dominant and successful MIAA Tournament.
"We can really go somewhere in this tournament," Jemison said. "I think we're going to be alright."
Young and Lopez had similar thoughts.
"I feel like the team is ready to play," said Lopez. "Right now, I feel me, [Jemison] and [Young] need to put this team on our shoulders and carry our team out to the finals and win the tournament.
"After tonight we can do anything. We can win the National Championship."
"We got to go out there and play like we did tonight," said Young. "We need to go out there and play as a team."
Young, Jemison and Lopez had more influence on this team other than just Saturday night. Jemison and Lopez were each apart of last year's MIAA regular season and tournament championships last year. Jemison was named to the 2006 All-Tournament team.
Beyond just basketball, all three players say they have grown as people off the court. Lopez's simple statement may be the most true.
"It was a great experience, man," he said. "I feel like I have grown physically, mentally and emotionally. The coaches have made me a better person and a better player. Being at this school makes me learn about my major - I feel like I have grown as a person as a whole."
Lopez and his fellow seniors look to make it a great experience in the MIAA tournament, which started Thursday, March 1 in Kansas City.
