The Southwest Baptist women's track and field team experienced the full spectrum of emotions this past weekend at the MIAA championships. On one hand, there were four women who earned All-MIAA honors ,and on the other hand there was freshman Jenny Blair.
Blair has arguably been the best freshman in the conference this year. She has broken four school records and is headed into the MIAA championships ranked third in the 400-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Blair was also part of the 1,600-meter relay team that ranked fifth heading into the conference meet. In preliminaries, Blair broke her own school record in the 400-meter and has the fastest qualifying time. In the 200-meter, Blair also qualified and was poised to earn two or three All-Conference awards by the end of Saturday.
Saturday did not go as planned for Blair. In the 400-meter, Blair took the lead after 200 meters and controlled the race for about one second. After Blair took the lead, the runner in second tried to make a move to the outside and tripped Blair. Blair went down hard and did not have enough time to make up the necessary distance. After her fall, Blair struggled in the 200-meter dash and failed to place.
Next up for Blair was the 1,600-meter relay. In this race, she never got a chance. Freshman McCall Towe led off for the Bearcats and, like Blair, got tripped in the congestion. Although Towe did not go to the ground, she was not able to recover and SBU never closed the gap on the field.
On the bright side of things, the women's distance medley relay (DMR) team of junior Alyssa Maggart and freshmen Jennifer Gillespie, Mallory Roth and Chelsea Strahm picked up the silver after a strong race.
All members of the DMR team were able to have another strong race as well. Maggart placed third in the 800-meter run after qualifying with the top time. Gillespie earned individual All-Conference honors by placing fifth in the 600-yard run. Roth just missed being All-MIAA in the 600-yard run, finishing seventh. Strahm also was just out of the awards, finishing ninth in the one-mile run.
