SBU partakes in 'Elixir of Love'

The Opera Theatre class will present their culminating project "The Elixir of Love" by Gaetano Donizetti Friday, March 9.
"I'm very excited about 'Elixer,'" said Michael Mays, instructor of voice. "It's a project for which we've been working and preparing for three years now."
Students enrolled in the Opera Theatre class make up the cast, including: seniors Jonathon Antle and Andrew Wessley; junior Stephen Gonzalez; sophomores Jessica Griffin and Joel Schilb and freshmen Greg Love, Traci Jackson, Adam Keller, Brianna Eaton, Atley Black, Lydia Essman, Ashley Walker and Randy Davenport.
According to Mays, the setting is a California diner in the late 1930s. Adina (Jackson) is the owner / manager, assisted by Gianetta (Eaton). Her nerdy admirer, Nemorino (Antle), dreams of Adina, hoping to work up the nerve to ask for her hand in marriage. Every attempt is met, however, with a flippant and capricious denial.
Even the town "hero," Belcore (Wessley), isn't really snagging Adina's heart; she only agrees to marry him to aggravate Nemorino. Then Dr. Dulcamara (Keller), a "peddler of potions," comes into town, pitching his dubious wares.
When Nemorino asks the doctor about a magical "elixir of love" used by Tristan to win the heart of the heartless queen Isolda, Dulcamara improvises and sells the naive boy a bottle of Bordeaux, expecting to sneak out of town before it - and all his other potions - are discovered to be completely fraudulent.
Then, as in all good operas, people start falling in love.
"The Elixir of Love" will be performed one time at 8 p.m. Friday, March 9 in Pike Auditorium. Admission is free.
