Southwest Baptist University students are facing a sad truth: it is hard to find good coffee with a good environment in this town. Granted, we do have Morsels, but apart from that, our choices are quite sparse. Furthermore, where else can you find good music and listen to it with most of your friends without buying a ticket?
The Songwriters' Showcase provided some relief Tuesday, March 6. The showcase was designed to give students a medium in which to perform and to provide an audience for the performers.
The showcase recieved a healthy turnout. Although, students would do almost anything for free coffee, low lighting and soft music.
SBU has turned the Goodson Student Union into a coffee house before, but this particular coffee house was formatted to find a current student that could produce the best lyrics and perform them with equal ability.
The basic idea was to recruit songwriters from SBU, have them donate $7 for a spot in the show and perform their self-written songs. All in all, seven performers came to play, and three walked away with cash.
Student Body President senior Laura Towner, Student Body Treasurer junior Brian Maloy and SGA Concert Chair senior Karen Marker judged each performance. Senior Audra Spain took first place, Nick Tew and Joel Ball grabbed second, and Andy Dale placed third.
To be fair to the rest of the performers, everyone had talent. Whether it be musically, vocally or socially, everyone had a story to tell, and the coffee house gave them all a chance to put it out there for students to hear.
Most of the performers chose to play the piano, and all of them had unique and warm sounds. Those who chose to play guitar were also very good, with performances that gave us a glimpse into the lives of the writers.
Nevertheless, Spain, the winner of the competition swayed the judges with a great voice and captivating melodies. Spain won $75.
The Songwriters' Showcase shows that students at SBU have talent. This type of presentation leaves me patiently waiting for the next coffee house show.
