Southwest Baptist University students will see a 6.5 percent increase in cost for the 2007-08 academic year.
According to Ron Maupin, vice president for administration, total fees for the 2007-08 school year will be $19,500, a $1,200 increase from 2006-07.
Tuition is up six percent from $13,300 in 2006-07 to $14,100 next semester. Air-conditioned dorms will see housing costs rise from $2,200 to $2,350 and Maupin Hall residents, SBU's only non air-conditioned dorm, will see the 2007-08 housing cost at $2,200 compared to last year's $2,050. Students living in campus apartments will pay $3,120 for housing next fall.
"We are working to make sure we do the best to keep costs down for students," said Maupin. "Student fees are the University's primary source of income."
Aside from housing and tuition costs, meal plan and student activity fees will increase for the 2007-08 semesters. Students with a 20-meal plan will see a $200 increase with the 2007-08 cost at $2,200. The 15-meal plan will cost students $2,100, and the 10-meal plan will cost $2,000. Off-campus or students living in campus apartments purchasing Bearcat Bucks (BCB) will pay $660, a $60 increase from the 2006-07 academic year.
"The North Central Association Higher Learning Commission challenged SBU to increase the pay to staff and faculty when they visited the University last fall," said Maupin. "[SBU is] in line with state school prices and at the lower end of other private schools."
