While the Executive Cabinet is in the midst of conducting budget hearings for the entire Southwest Baptist University budget, the Student Government Association budget committee is about to start hearings to decide how to allocate Student Activity fees for the 2007-08 school year.
The budget committee consists of Student Body Treasurer junior Brian Maloy, Director of Student Activities Zach Waters, class treasurers and two non-SGA member SBU students. In the event that a class does not have a treasurer, the responsibility will fall to the class vice president, and in the event that a class has no vice president, the responsibility will fall to the class president.
According to Maloy, any club or organization on campus who desires money gets a hearing, whether they are asking for the first time or if they are desiring an increase in their allocated money for the next school year.
"I am looking to hear from clubs that are wanting money for the first time, why they have started their club, who they are serving and what specifically the money will be used for," said Maloy. "From clubs that aren't asking for an increase, I want to know they are using all the money we've allocated to them to the best of their ability, and if not, then why."
Each club or organization is required to turn in a budget proposal, and if a budget increase is requested, the club or organization is required to attend a budget hearing.
"If [clubs] are asking for an increase, then I for sure want to know why, [and] how [that money is] going to be used," said Maloy. "This is students' money; it's SGA's job to give it back to them how they need it, but we have to be careful it isn't wasted."
The budget committee members will assess the requests and present the proposed budget allocations to the student representatives for approval. The budget must receive two-thirds approval to pass.
Budget proposals are due Friday, March 9, and hearings are scheduled for the first week of April.
"Mr. Waters and I are considering moving the due date back to allow more time for every person on campus to be aware of the needed steps to receive money," said Maloy.
Last year, a budget committee met with four of the 23 campus organizations receiving funds - the Omnibus / Student Publications, Psi Chi / Sociology and Criminal Justice Honor Society, Campus Crusade and Run 2 Win. All four organizations requested an increase in budget.
Last year's committee based their allocations on a projected Student Activity fees sum of $130,500 based on a projected enrollment of 1,450 students.
