Southwest Baptist University's Student Life staff held Coffee Talks for all on-campus dorm residents Tuesday, February 27 for Leslie Hall, Landen Hall, Beasley Hall and Plaster Lodge / Meyer Hall and Thursday, March 1 for Woody - Gott Hall, Maupin Hall and Memorial Hall.
Approximately 20 students each attended the Leslie and Landen Hall coffee talk and the Beasley Hall and Plaster Lodge / Meyer hall coffee talk. Around 35 students each attended the Woody - Gott Hall and the Maupin and Memorial Hall coffee talk.
During the discussion, Dean of Students Rob Harris, Director of Residence Life Amy Welch and Director of Student Activities Zach Waters led students in a questionnaire. Each student used handheld remotes to lock in answers. Questions posed to the students included satisfaction of security locks on dorms, satisfaction of visitation changes and lifestyle questions regarding homosexual behaviors and tolerance of those behaviors among Christians as compared to heterosexual behaviors.
Students expressed concerns for lighting on campus, changing visitation times to add visitation every Saturday and the improvement of Chapel services.
Harris discussed SBU's policy on homosexuality. After reading a story about a student at a Christian university claiming to be gay and their struggles of not being accepted even though they loved God, Harris asked for student feedback.
"We should love all people no matter what," said one student. "It's hard because the truth, can offend, because it offends our flesh. [Homosexuality] is a cultural decision, whether they meant to make it or not, if we believe it's not inborn. It's really hard to love that person because you have to tell them the truth. What we usually do as Christians is say is this is wrong and the churches push [homosexuals] away, and now the church has bad stigma. It is hard to love someone and tell them they're wrong without a relationship. You have to tell them that you don't agree with the lifestyle, but not until you have a friendship."
